Wayne Russell

Artist, Musician Wayne Russell was born in Pontotoc, Mississippi to parents who picked cotton on family land. Both his mother and father came from homes where music was a part of daily life. Most of his family members played and sang in church as well as community gatherings.
At the age of 5 Wayne and his family moved to Memphis Tennessee where Wayne’s love of art and music blossomed. He fondly remembers receiving art supplies and guitars each Christmas during his childhood, and by the time he completed High School he was voted most talented student.
Wayne graduated from Memphis State University in 1972 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Interior Design. After graduation, he also studied illustration under artist John Robinette.
Wayne has been a professional musician his entire life and has performed in many countries. He plays Guitar and Bass (his main instrument), and is a published songwriter. Wayne has also continued his work as a commercial Interior Designer and is currently employed with August Incorporated.

During Wayne’s career as a musician he continually developed his artistic talent by painting portraits as well as keeping a sketched diary of band gigs, musicians, and places he has traveled. Most recently he contributed the cover art for the Reba Russell Band’s third C.D. release titled “City of the Blues”. It is during this time that Wayne became a fan of artist George Hunt’s work. Wayne was very inspired by Mr. Hunt’s artistic interpretation of the people and musicians of the Mississippi Delta. This concept is one of the main themes of Wayne’s most recent art work.
